Nadi Dosha Cancellation: Why It Does Not Apply in 95% of Matches

Nadi is the heaviest koota in Ashtakoot Milan. Eight of the 36 gunas ride on it, and when two charts share the same Nadi, matching software awards zero and prints the words “Nadi Dosha”. Engagements have been called off over that one line. In the overwhelming majority of those cases the dosha was already cancelled by rules the software never checked.

What Nadi Dosha Actually Means

Nadi divides the 27 Nakshatras into three groups — Aadi, Madhya and Antya — which correspond to the Ayurvedic constitutions Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Nadi Milan compares the Nadi of the bride’s Moon Nakshatra with the groom’s. Different Nadi scores the full 8 points. The same Nadi scores nothing, and that zero is what gets reported as Nadi Dosha.

The classical concern is with progeny and with the health of children. The reasoning is constitutional: two people of the same Nadi reinforce the same bodily tendencies rather than balancing them. This is why Nadi is the koota most often discussed in medical astrology.

The Three Nadis and Their Nakshatras

Nadi Dosh Parihar: When the Dosha Does Not Apply (नाड़ी दोष कब नहीं लगता)

So can Nadi Dosha be cancelled? Yes, and usually it already is. Classical matchmaking treats it as conditional rather than absolute — a same Nadi marriage is nowhere forbidden in the texts. What the texts give instead is a set of exceptions, and these are the Nadi dosha cancellation rules that apply most often.

The dosha stands cancelled when any one of the following is true:

1. Same Nakshatra, different Pada. Both partners share the birth star, but the Moon falls in different quarters of it. This alone clears it.

2. Same Rashi, different Nakshatra. Both Moons sit in the same sign, but in different birth stars within it.

3. Same Nakshatra, different Rashi. Nine Nakshatras straddle two signs — Krittika, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Dhanishta and Purva Bhadrapada — so two people can share a birth star and still hold different Moon signs.

4. The Rashi lords are the same planet, or are mutual friends. Lordship overrides the constitutional objection.

Because the 27 Nakshatras distribute unevenly across these conditions, at least one of them applies to the large majority of same-Nadi pairs. That is where the 95% figure comes from — it is not a softening of the rule, it is the rule.

A Worked Example

Suppose both Moons fall in Krittika. Krittika belongs to Antya Nadi, so the software sees the same Nadi, awards 0 of 8, and flags the dosha.

Now look closer. Krittika spans two signs: its first pada sits in Aries, and padas two to four sit in Taurus. If the bride’s Moon is in Krittika pada 1 and the groom’s is in Krittika pada 3, they have different Padas and different Rashis. Rules 1 and 3 both apply. The dosha is cancelled twice over, and the calculator never mentioned it.

Why Free Calculators Get This Wrong

Most matchmaking software implements a single instruction: same Nadi, zero points. Cancellation requires Pada, Rashi and planetary lordship to be computed and compared, which most free tools simply do not do. That is the gap this series exists to close — do not mistake software for an astrologer.
