Kundli matching, or Kundli Milan, is the Vedic astrology method of comparing two birth charts before marriage. The most widely used system is Ashtakoot Milan — eight-fold matching — which scores compatibility across eight categories called kootas, worth 36 points in total.Every koota is calculated from the Moon’s Nakshatra (birth star) and Rashi (Moon sign) of both partners. Nadi and Bhakoot carry the most weight — 15 of the 36 points between them. That is why a match can lose nearly half its score to just two factors, and why both of those factors deserve a cancellation check before anyone draws a conclusion.

Dosha Cancellation: Why a Low Score Is Not a Rejection

Three doshas cause most of the anxiety around kundli matching, and all three have well-documented exceptions in the classical literature. This calculator checks each one against your charts rather than simply flagging it.

Nadi Dosha Cancellation

Nadi dosha is raised when both partners share the same Nadi, costing all 8 points. It is cancelled when:

both partners have the same Rashi but different Nakshatras
both share the same Nakshatra but fall in different Padas
the Nakshatra spans two Rashis and the partners sit in different ones
the Rashi lords of the two charts are the same planet

Bhakoot Dosha Cancellation

Bhakoot dosha arises from 6–8 (Shadashtak), 9–5 (Navam-Pancham) or 2–12 (Dwirdwadash) Moon sign positions, and costs 7 points. It is cancelled when the two Rashi lords are the same planet, when those lords are mutual friends, or when both Moon signs share a Navamsa lord. Manglik (Mangal) Dosha Exceptions

Manglik dosha is not part of the 36 gunas at all — it is judged separately, from the placement of Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. It is commonly exempted when Mars sits in its own or exalted sign, when Mars is conjunct or aspected by Jupiter or the Moon, or when both partners are Manglik. What Ashtakoot Milan Does Not Check

Ashtakoot Milan is built entirely on the Moon. It reads the Nakshatra and Rashi of each partner and nothing else — the other eight grahas play no part in the 36 points. That makes it a fast, genuinely useful screen, and an incomplete one.

What is a good Guna Milan score for marriage?

18 out of 36 or above is traditionally considered acceptable. 25 to 32 is very good, and 33 to 36 is excellent but rare. A score below 18 calls for a deeper reading rather than an automatic rejection.

Is 18 gunas enough for marriage?

Yes, 18 is the conventional minimum. But which points were lost matters more than the total — 18 gunas with Nadi and Bhakoot intact is a better position than 24 gunas with both missing.

Can Nadi Dosha be cancelled?
